IDC has released its latest report on progress of mobile phone sales in India, the growth of smartphones in Indian market seems to be quite promising for all the vendors and especially local brands like Micromax and Karbonn. According to IDC, Apple took second place in Indian markets with amount of revenue earned from its range of iPhones. Thanks to active channeling of sales through deeper partnership with Ingram Micro and Redington, Apple was able to push out impressive number of iPhone 5 along with other iPhones. Still, Apple could not manage to grab a top spot when number of units sold were compared, even Microsoft’s Windows Mobile phones were sold in larger number than iPhones in India. The growth of smartphones has been at a staggering 48% in 2012 compared to 2011 with a total volume of 16.3 million units reaching approximately 7% of the overall mobile phone market in India which is estimated at 218 million units with 16% growth over 2011.
The market is expected to grow further in 2013 for Smartphone sales in India with 70% increase of 2012. The primary demand for smartphones seems to be in the 100$ to 200$ segment led by in house brands like Micromax and Karbonn apart from international brands like Samsung and Sony. There has been serious demand for phones with 4″+ screen size and dual core processors. Apart from that, local brands seems to be dominating in the sub 100$ mobile phone segment as well.

- Samsung remained the leader and pace-setter for the market, inspiring both international and domestic vendors to launch their own quad-core and 5-inch+ screen size models.
- Micromax outperformed the market through its aggressive ramp-up and an enhanced product portfolio and new launches in the past quarter.
- Sony garnered a significant shipment share owing to its mid-tier range of smartphones (priced between $150-300) doing quite well in the market.
- Nokia, came in fourth with its range of Lumia devices powered by Windows Phone 8 OS, again in the mid range segment, which drew noteworthy attention from consumers especially in the Tier 1 cities.
